A true magic square frame avoids an enclosure like a picture frame. Technically a frame around the numbers would turn the 6 positive and 6 negative struts of the diagram into a total of 24 as well as destroy the addition of meaning that are given to the numbers by the number of struts that encase them. For example, in a true diagram, all even numbers are surrounded by two struts, all odd numbers are surrounded by three and only the center, being number five is encased by four.
