Words that used to have numerical equivalents used a system once called by a Greek name, gematria. As the for letter name for God, called the Tetragrammaton, quoted as in the first line of Deuteronomy 6:4 translates, “Hear O Israel the Lord our God, the Lord in One,” the numerical equivalent is 1118.
